SUMMARY:Vas Aradhana Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Buddhist monk rain retreat ceremony\, known as Vassa or “Rains Retreat\,” is a significant annual event in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. It typically lasts for three lunar months\, usually from July to October. \nHistorical Background \nThe tradition dates back to the time of the Buddha. During the rainy season\, traveling was difficult and could lead to monks inadvertently harming crops and small creatures. To avoid this\, the Buddha instituted the practice of monks staying in one place for the duration of the monsoon season\, focusing on study\, meditation\, and teaching. \nOverall\, the rain retreat ceremony is a period of spiritual growth and communal harmony\, reinforcing the foundational principles of Buddhism.

SUMMARY:Vesak Sil Observance
DESCRIPTION:A deeply meaningful Vesak Sil Observance was held on May 19\, 2024\, at the Hudson Valley Buddhist Vihara\, 26 Red Hawk Ln\, Poughkeepsie\, NY 12601. \nOn this sacred Vesak day\, members of our community gathered to observe Sil\, meditate\, listen to Dhamma teachings\, and reflect on the life and teachings of the Buddha. Vesak is especially significant as it commemorates the three great events in the Buddha’s life—His birth\, Enlightenment\, and Parinibbāna. \nIt was a beautiful day of devotion and togetherness\, as children\, parents\, elders\, and devotees came together to honor the Buddha and strengthen their commitment to the Dhamma. \nThese photographs preserve the precious memories of one of the early Vesak celebrations at our new Vihara—a place that had become a long-awaited home for our community. \n“The gift of Dhamma excels all gifts.” — The Buddha \nA day of faith\, reflection\, and gratitude—together in the Dhamma.

SUMMARY:A Memorable Beginning - The Bodhi Tree of Hudson Valley Buddhist Vihara
DESCRIPTION:On December 23\, 2018\, a deeply meaningful and memorable moment in the history of the Hudson Valley Buddhist Vihara took place at the New York Buddhist Vihara in Queens Village\, New York. \nOn this special occasion\, the Venerable Kurunegoda Dhammaloka Thero generously presented a sacred Bodhi tree to the Hudson Valley Buddhist Vihara. The Bodhi tree was received on behalf of the Vihara by its President\, Mr. Preethi Atalugama\, together with his family\, the Narampanawa family\, and Mrs. Anula Jayathilake. \nThis sacred Bodhi tree holds a very special and cherished place in the history of the Hudson Valley Buddhist Vihara. At a time when the Vihara did not yet have a permanent physical location\, the Bodhi tree became a living symbol of the community’s faith\, devotion\, hope\, and aspiration to establish a Buddhist temple in the Hudson Valley. \nWith great reverence and care\, the Bodhi tree was brought home and lovingly protected and nurtured by the families until a permanent location for the Vihara could be established. It was kept with the heartfelt hope that\, when the appropriate temple grounds were secured\, the tree would find its permanent home there. \nAlthough there was not yet a physical temple\, the Bodhi tree represented the vision of the temple that lived in the hearts of the devotees. It stood as a symbol of the Buddha’s Dhamma and of the community’s shared commitment to creating a spiritual home in the Hudson Valley. \nThis meaningful occasion on December 23\, 2018\, will forever remain an important part of the Vihara’s history. The sacred Bodhi tree represents not merely a tree\, but a living connection to the Buddha’s enlightenment\, a symbol of peace and wisdom\, and a reminder of the dedication and devotion of those who worked toward establishing the Hudson Valley Buddhist Vihara. \nMay this sacred Bodhi tree continue to flourish and remain a lasting symbol of the Buddha’s Dhamma\, peace\, compassion\, wisdom\, and the enduring aspirations of the Hudson Valley Buddhist community. \nMay it be a blessing for generations to come.

SUMMARY:Dhamma School
DESCRIPTION:“අපදාන සෝභිනී පඤ්ඤා”\n“Wisdom shines through good character.” \nOn December 2\, 2018\, the Dhamma School children of the Hudson Valley Buddhist Vihara and Meditation Center participated in Buddha Puja and meditation before beginning their classes. \nAt that time\, as we did not yet have our own Vihara premises\, our Dhamma activities were held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Poughkeepsie. \nOur purpose was not merely to impart knowledge\, but to cultivate discipline\, mindfulness\, compassion\, and wholesome character alongside education. Through this harmonious approach\, we aspired to guide our children to become responsible and compassionate citizens of the world\, enriched with both knowledge and good character.
